So the things you need to look for in a camera are:
1. Mounting style. The mount for this thing kind of sucks; the cable set is intended to run straight up the middle in the arm and into the wall/soffit, but the ball joint in there will create a severe pinch point on the cable bundle if you need certain angles depending on horizontal/vertical mounting. And the cable is captive in the mount due to bulbous connectors. It’s just not very well thought out and I’m not certain how long the plastic will last outdoors.
2. Imager. The imager is actually pretty decent. HDR mode is more useful during the day to clear up the shadows. At night all it does is produce blobby smears.
3. Software. This camera has the really awkward distinction of pairing a pretty decent feature set with an infuriatingly bad interface. RTSP works out of the box and the edge AI actually works pretty well and it does look like a lot of thought has been put into the features and controls. However, I use the app daily and it’s so badly designed it’s not even funny. It wastes screen real estate, doesn’t pick appropriate thumbnails, punishes you for missing a hard-to-hit ellipsis, still has “swipe” engaged while you’re zoomed into a video trying to pan around, hiding video controls, “network is unstable try again later”, illegible file naming (looks like seconds since epoch) etc. The software is basically a hot mess.
Lastly, the camera seems to have stability issues. They have a daily reboot feature, but they really should just fix their bugs. I’m in a position right now where I can’t allow the camera to go down in order to debug the issue further, and support is… not as technical as they should be about this. In order to retrieve debug logs apparently you have to physically pull the SD card. So I guess if you have to get up on a ladder to physically pull the card then sucks to be you. Should be able to pull the log remotely.
This camera is a good effort but it’s kind of not ready for prime time.
Update: July 2024, recent firmware version 1.1.17 is even less stable and seems to make the camera hard crash after around 24hrs. It’s awkward that they don’t even have a watchdog implemented. If your power is mounted such that you have to get up in the attic or on a ladder to reboot the device, well sucks to be you.
Update 2: Same month, now somehow the imager has come loose inside the housing. The camera hasn’t moved, however somehow a dark line which appears to be the circular boundary of the front lens housing is now visible in my picture. As predicted, the physical design/construction of this camera is questionable.

First and foremost let me say if you are at all thinking about getting this camera, don’t think, just do it. It is easy to set-up. The video quality is great, you are not going to be reading license plates or doing facial recognition but as a value priced camera they are impressive. Night time looks like day time. I have mine set to detect people only and I have to say it works flawlessly to the point where I leave them set to alert at night when we are sleeping. I wasn’t able to do that with my other cameras because there always seemed to be false detections. If you set up your detection zones properly you will only be notified for motion in those specific zones. I use a 256gb micro SD card for 24 recording. The Tapo app is quick to load. You can also live stream RTSP this camera with VLC player on your TV or PC. You cannot live stream RTSP with VLC player if you have the cloud based subscription service though. I have never had a disconnect or any other issue with this camera.

There’s no camera right now that can compete with this level of clarity in low light conditions. There’s only a few negatives but so many positives for this camera. I’m in aww right now.
Video/Picture quality is top notch. Its clear in low light as well as brightly lit areas. The fact that I mounted this behind a window is just perplexing in a good way. The time it takes to open a notification to a live video is very fast. Faster than my Google Nest cameras which are faster than my Wyze and Eufy’s. It also doesn’t seem to miss an alert. The number of notifications can get annoying but its somewhat controllable through the app. The app works well and you can have up to 32 cameras. If you want to talk through the camera, its surprisingly loud and clear.
The only negatives I can think of are the lack of “animated gif” style rich notifications. So you get pics but not a video (Google Nests have this). Uses a barrel type power connecter (Wish it was USB-C). No desktop web browser access to the cameras (like the Nest). You can stream the video feed to apps or a NAS but if you’re using a micro-SD card, its one or the other. Not both. Lack of Email Notifications (like the Nest)
This may be the best home camera you can get right now. Will be interesting if Google ever takes their Nest acquisition seriously but I’d buy this over the Nest even though the Nest products are a bit more polished.
Hint: Start the Tapo Care (for cloud recording and rich notifications @ $35/yr) during setup and if you plan on purchasing the subscription, don’t start it until the end of the trial period. If you pay early, the date starts from the purchase date so you lose a few days…

An excellent security camera for the price. Plug-in installation was simple, and download and setup of the app on the cell phone was simple. Picture quality is excellent. Nice to have local storage in mini SD card and no need for a subscription. Video is sent to the app on the phone and can be downloaded and stored from there for future reference. Detection modes can be set for people, animals, cars etc. and it is simple to adjust the sensitivity to reduce the number of false alarms. Overall, a great camera for the price.

While some reviewers said they found this camera easy to program, I found it difficult. However, I do appreciate the great quality of picture and excellent quality of features. The negatives however included the facts that sometimes the camera loses connectivity and takes far too long to comeback in connection. Also, often the camera is too slow in turning on special features and is overly sensitive to motion in that even rain triggers the motion sensor.
